Guest Speaker:
Emily Neff, Executive Director, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art

The Brooks Museum, which was founded in 1916, is the oldest and largest art museum in the state of Tennessee. This established institution enriches the lives of our diverse community through the expanding collection, varied exhibitions, and dynamic programs that reflect the art of world cultures from antiquity to the present. Due to its hugely popular and varied events schedule, Neff will inform us not only about the history of the museum but also about future plans which involve finding a new location in the hot real estate climate of the Mid-South.

Interested in organizing exhibitions that push the field of American art in new and innovative directions, Neff most recently mounted American Adversaries: West and Copley in a Transatlantic World, which received praise for its innovative approach to exhibiting colonial art in a global context. Its exhibition catalogue earned an award from Tyler Green as MAN’s best art book of the year for 2013. During the past two years, Neff served as President of the Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC), an organization of 1,200 art curators from across North America.

Neff holds a B.A. in Art History from Yale University, an M.A. in Art History from Rice University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. A fellow at the Clark Art Institute; the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and Research Center; and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts  (CASVA) at the National Gallery, Washington, DC, she is most recently a Fellow of the Center for Curatorial Leadership in New York City. She serves on the Advisory Board of the Smithsonian’s American Art journal and the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, CO.
